The objective of the present study was to determine the size at first sexual maturity, the sexual ratio and the gonadosomatic index of Prochilodus nigricans “boquichico” in the San Pablo city, Bajo Amazonas, Loreto Region, Peru. The study period was carried out from November 2020 to October 2021, in which 433 individuals were collected from markets, ports, and fishing areas. 246 females (56.80%) and 187 males (43.20%) were recorded, and the sex ratio was 1.3:1 in favor of females. The size at first sexual maturity was estimated at a total length of 24.8 (24.6 – 25.1 cm) in females and in males a total length of 24.2 (23.9 – 24.6 cm). The gonadosomatic index presented high values in November (IGS of 16.9% in females and 1.39% in males) and December (IGS of 13.5% in females and 1.24% in males); These are months of greatest reproductive intensity of P. nigricans. With these results, it is proposed to extend to other fishing areas of the Peruvian Amazon the prohibition of catching this species during the breeding season, which is from September to March. The findings of this study propose the prohibition of the capture of this species in other fishing areas of the Peruvian Amazon during the reproduction season considered between the months of September to March, in addition to providing important information for the development of effective conservation strategies. and management of P. nigricans populations in the lower Amazon, Peru.
