Abstract

Objective: To identify the main hospital risk factors associated with neonatal mortality in a regional hospital in northern Peru. Material and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study analyzed 619 hospitalized newborns and 78 deaths in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of JAMO Regional Hospital II-2, Tumbes, from 2019 to 2021. Birth weight, hospitalization time, and basic cause of death were evaluated. Results: The highest mortality occurred in newborns weighing < 1250 g, mainly between the 3rd and 7th day of hospitalization. Neonatal sepsis was the leading cause of death (47.8 % in < 1000 g and 71.4 % in 1000–1249 g). Conclusions: The critical neonatal mortality weight identified was 1250 g. Strengthening hospital biosecurity and implementing perinatal regionalization networks are essential strategies to reduce neonatal mortality.
