Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiological behavior of dengue in the Tumbes region during 2024 according to demographic, social, and geographic variables. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive, and retrospective study based on epidemiological surveillance and laboratory records from the Regional Health Directorate of Tumbes. Confirmed cases by NS1 antigen, IgM, or RT-PCR tests were included. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed using frequencies and percentages for categorical variables, and median with interquartile range for numerical variables with non-normal distribution. Results: A total of 2,594 dengue cases were confirmed. The median age was 22 years (IQR: 12–38). The most affected age groups were 30–59 years (29.6%) and 0–11 years (24.4%). The highest concentration of cases occurred in the province of Tumbes (92.1%). Diagnostic confirmation was mainly performed through NS1 antigen detection (77.5%), followed by IgM (23.8%) and RT-PCR (1.4%). Transmission showed a predominantly urban pattern and marked seasonality, with a higher number of cases during months with higher temperature and precipitation. Conclusion: Dengue in Tumbes during 2024 mainly affected young populations, was concentrated in urban areas, and showed marked seasonality associated with climatic conditions favorable for transmission. These findings may help strengthen epidemiological surveillance and guide strategies focused on vector control and prevention in the region.
