Bioaccumulation of toxic metals in shark fins: An invisible danger to consumers
DOI:

This review article addresses the serious issue of indiscriminate shark fishing driven by the demand for fins in Asian markets and its consequential impact on shark populations and marine ecosystems. It highlights the bioaccumulation of heavy metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium in shark tissues, posing significant risks to human health and marine biodiversity. Advanced techniques such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were employed for precise detection of these contaminants. Despite technological advancements, challenges persist in standardizing methods and obtaining consistent global data. The urgent need to strengthen international regulations and promote sustainable fishing practices is emphasized to mitigate environmental impacts and ensure the long-term conservation of sharks as key components of global marine ecosystems.
