Abstract

This systematic review examines alternative proteins (plant-based, insect-derived, and cultured meat) as sustainable and healthy options for human diets, focusing on their nutritional and environmental impacts. Using rigorous methodologies (PICOC, PRISMA, and Bibliometrix), the study analyzed 100 scientific articles selected from 207,399 records in Scopus. Results highlight these proteins' potential to provide balanced nutritional profiles (rich in essential amino acids and antioxidants) while reducing ecological footprints compared to traditional sources. However, challenges remain, including sensory acceptance, regulatory gaps, and limited accessibility in developing countries.

The study also explores global initiatives, such as the European SUSINCHAIN project and insect-based flour production by the French company ŸNSECT, along with implementation strategies in regions like East Africa. We conclude that, despite persistent cultural and technological barriers, advancements in biotechnology and supportive policies could accelerate adoption—particularly in emerging markets like Latin America.
