Abstract

The food industry faces challenges in ensuring tasty, safe and high-quality products over long periods. This study addresses the use of nanotechnology and biopolymers as sustainable solutions for food packaging in response to the environmental problem caused by conventional plastics. Nanotechnology offers packaging with antimicrobial and barrier properties, extending the shelf life of food. Biopolymers, biodegradable and from renewable sources, are an environmentally friendly alternative for packaging. Through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR), the applicability of these technologies in the food industry is analyzed, using methods such as PICOC and bibliometric analysis to evaluate relevant studies. The findings highlight advances in safety and mechanical properties of these new materials, but also point to challenges in their large-scale implementation, including concerns about safety and consumer acceptance. It highlights the need for further research to assess industrial feasibility and impact on food safety, as well as long-term economic and sustainability aspects. This comprehensive approach seeks to encourage the use of sustainable technologies in food packaging, helping to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment.
